The Silver Standard of Foliage Plants
Goeppertia orbifolia - still widely sold as Calathea orbifolia - is native to the humid forests of Bolivia, where it carpets the shaded understory with its sweeping, boldly patterned leaves. Each round leaf is painted in alternating bands of deep green and silvery-green, giving the plant an almost metallic, hand-illustrated quality that no filter can improve on.
It belongs to the prayer plant family and shares the family habit of nyctinasty - leaves that slowly rise and fold at night, then unfurl again by morning. This daily rhythm is a reliable sign your plant is content. Among the large-leaved Goeppertia species, orbifolia is considered one of the most dramatic and one of the most forgiving, making it a favourite for interiors with good ambient light.
Planting & care
Plant in a well-draining, peat-free potting mix with added perlite to keep roots aerated without waterlogging. Choose a pot only slightly larger than the root ball - orbifolia prefers a snug fit and is prone to root rot in oversized containers. Set it 2-3 ft from a bright window, shielded from any direct sun, which will bleach or scorch those beautiful leaves.
Water with filtered, distilled, or rainwater if possible; orbifolia is sensitive to fluoride and chlorine, which can cause brown leaf tips. Keep the mix consistently moist but never soggy, and reduce watering slightly in winter. Humidity above 50% is ideal - a pebble tray with water or a nearby humidifier makes a meaningful difference. Feed monthly with a half-strength balanced liquid fertiliser during spring and summer only.
Brown Tips Are a Message, Not a Life Sentence
Brown, crispy leaf edges are almost always a water-quality or humidity issue rather than a sign of disease. Switch to rainwater or let tap water sit overnight before using, boost humidity, and new growth should emerge clean. Trim damaged tips with clean scissors at a slight angle to keep the plant looking tidy while it adjusts.
